Auburn, impressive. LSU, held their own for the most part. Alabama: back on track. Texas: gone from my rankings forever. They're banned. Missouri: Make my Upset Pick right again. Oklahoma: You won't be seeing No. 1 anytime soon. Iowa: You ruined everything for me. I picked you to win the Big Ten. Still can if you beat Michigan State and get ranked ahead of Wisconsin and Ohio State. The Big Ten tiebreaker rule is the head-to-head between the two highest BCS-ranked teams. That's what the Big 12 tiebreaker should have been in 2008.
The bad part about Texas losing a Noon game is being bummed the rest of the day. Still a good day of football though.
I'm just providing useless random commentary now.
Finally put a picture of my beautiful dorm college football setup
Ok anyway...
Iowa's special teams had always been a strength, but with a true freshman walk-on kicker you get an extra-point blocked and that was the crucial part of the game. If not, it goes to overtime and maybe Iowa wins. Iowa's defense did its job in the first half but couldn't finish. I was pretty disappointed.
Michigan State avoided the upset to Northwestern (phew since I didn't pick that one) and were really impressive in the comeback with Mark Dantonio back on the sidelines. They move up in my rankings because of that. Alabama moves up too.
I'm still waiting for Boise State to get a below-average grade on the "Eye Test" just one game before I drop them at all. I have them No. 1 again, but I don't know for how long because I'm just now starting to buy into Oregon. Yeah I'm starting to buy into Oregon...
If anyone jumps Boise State though it should be Auburn. This Heisman Trophy contention that had a whole bunch of candidates all bunched together now has one candidate. Just one. His name is Cam Newton. And Patrick Peterson of LSU was my favorite a few weeks back and he had his chance with Newton today and who did Newton run over at the goal line of his long TD run? That was Patrick Peterson. Peterson was the only guy that didn't quit in the LSU defense though. That's why I love him. You know everyone has those guys that they root for, guys that they like or love, but don't love the team they're playing on. Patrick Peterson's one of mine. Also Blaine Gabbert and Aldon Smith.
So with Gabbert and Smith, I said they were the keys. Both needed to be healthy and play well to beat Oklahoma. Mission accomplished. Gabbert was outstanding and so was Smith getting to Landry Jones and getting an interception too.
Blackshirt Defense? Uhhhh Oklahoma State put up 41 against Nebraska. In my preview I talked about the matchup and whether Nebraska had enough secondary depth to defend the Air Raid. Turns out they didn't, and Justin Blackmon was able to beat Prince Amukamara on occasion. I'm buying stock in Justin Blackmon now too, and Amukamara is not the best corner in the nation, that's Patrick Peterson. Did you hear that Mel Kiper? Peterson = Top 10 Pick, Amukamara = Top 20 Pick.
Enough of this day.
