New #1 in my Top 25

October 17, 2010

The number team in America goes down again as the Ohio State Buckeyes couldn't survive the Wisconsin Badgers in Camp Randall. This opens up a lot, not only in the national championship race, but the BCS as well. In My Gripe with the BCS: 2010 Version, I wrote that I believe TCU would be snubbed by the BCS this year. Now, with this Ohio State loss, the door stays open for TCU because I still project an Ohio State loss to Iowa. If Ohio State becomes a two-loss team, TCU could get into the BCS ahead of them. My projections were that Ohio State would play Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. Now, even Nebraska looks like a border-line BCS team. Which this all just proves that it's always too early to project the BCS.

Les Miles didn't need any clock management help today, but a SEC colleague did. South Carolina went down 31-28 to Kentucky today. Kentucky converted a 4th-down-and-7 for the go ahead touchdown. Then South Carolina went down the field and the game ended on a Stephen Garcia interception in the endzone, but they only needed a field goal to tie. The clock was already stopped with 11 seconds left but Spurrier burned his final timeout anyway, and then didn't even draw up the perfect play.

Auburn's offense exploded against Arkansas today putting up 65 points. Was that the same Arkansas defense that held Alabama to 24 points? This was my dilemma putting my new rankings together, Arkansas is a Top 15 team on paper, but a team that gives up 65 points isn't a Top 25 team are they?

Texas and Washington came through for me for a couple correct Upset Picks. Check on my other ones here: Thoughts headed into Week 7

And now as I'm typing, game over in Hawaii...Nevada goes down. So now I can finalize my latest rankings.

There's a lot more I can say about today's action in college football. Remember how all week I was saying this weekend sucked because there weren't that many intriguing matchups and there was only 5 or 6 I really wanted to watch. Well, I ended up watching 20 games today. Not a record though, I remember watching 22 one Saturday last year.

For more crap, listen in to the debut show of "The Goal Line Stand" on ComRadio at 2 on Sunday.
I'll also be on "It's Showtime" at 5.

Things are getting interesting in the SEC East. Could Georgia make a run? Can Florida rebound? Can South Carolina still win it?
A lot rides on the Oklahoma-Missouri and Nebraska-Oklahoma State matchups. A Missouri and/or Oklahoma State win puts Texas right back in the Big 12 Title race.

Heisman Ballot

2. Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
3. Kellen Moore, QB, Boise State
4. Denard Robinson, QB, Michigan
