Why the Changes?
Shuffling the Top 3
Oklahoma’s defense is what I’m skeptical about and they dominated a good offense in Tulsa. Yes, it’s still Tulsa, but Tulsa beat Notre Dame last year and gave Boise State a fight. If Oklahoma’s defense plays that way every week, they are the best team in the nation. They have a better offense than both Alabama and LSU.
LSU’s Jarrett Lee has not thrown an interception in his last 94 pass attempts. I like it when LSU does not turn the ball over. The defense is dominant, but so is Alabama’s but right now until Alabama gets their quarterback battle resolved, LSU is ahead of them.
Boise State’s rise
I had questions about the wide receivers replacing Austin Pettis and Titus Young. I knew they’re talented and good pass catchers, but now I see how quick they are and how fast they can play. Obviously, Georgia was faster and more athletic and it didn’t matter. Boise State’s defense dominated Georgia as well. Now I believe that defense can compete with faster teams and beat Oregon, Stanford and maybe Florida State.
The Newbies
Penn State pounded Indiana State but there’s still a lot to gauge about this team. Who’s the quarterback and how will the defense fare against better offenses? The offense could be good. Right now, with a lack of other teams to choose from, Penn State is a Top 25 team.
South Florida beat Notre Dame in South Bend which is impressive but there’s still questions about the defense. The offense will be one of the best in the Big East. Right now, a big win gets USF some Top 25 love.
Who’s too high?
It might be Texas at No. 20 but I see them as a better team than Missouri currently although Missouri had the higher preseason ranking. Texas offense needs to click and the secondary needs to learn in a hurry but the front seven is dominant.
Who’s too low?
Arizona State. They have the talent to be a much higher ranked team but also a lot of injured players. They have a lot of quality wins waiting to happen on their schedule that will boost them up the rankings. They could finish the season unranked or in the Top 15.
